Did you know there are more than 1.4 million active duty military members in the United States? More than 70% of married active duty military members have children, so these men and women are supported by their more than 3.6 million family members.
As proud residents of Military City USA, Tri-Starr Group wanted to find a way to give back to those in the military and their families and to show support for our troops. Our commitment to the military hits especially close to home, as 15% of our internal staff are veterans themselves, along with spouses of our team members. We discovered the organization Soldiers’ Angels and immediately were interested in working with them to give back.
This holiday season, we adopted three military families with a total of eleven children to support for Christmas, because the thought of touching children’s lives during the holidays grabbed our hearts. Each of our three divisions, Corporate, Operations, and Sales, were responsible for one Soldiers’ Angels family. We gifted each family two $100 gift cards, one for food and $50 worth of presents for each child, inspired by gift ideas received from the parents ahead of time.
Although we strive to give back to the community all year round, this occasion really resonated with us. As a company, it was fun gathering in small groups to plan and execute the shopping and wrapping in preparation to present to our three families. Each of our groups got to meet the parents and with one family we even got to meet their younger children and service dogs. Going in, we thought we were just going to thank them for their military service and give them the gifts. However, each of the families spent time with us sharing stories about their military experiences, their children, and their struggles as well as their blessings. Each of us was deeply moved emotionally by the sacrifices and struggles these families face every day, and we were unanimously surprised by their incredibly gracious attitudes towards the challenges they face. All three families have very busy lives with their childrens’ activities and sports, in addition to the physical and emotional challenges they incur daily as a family. We found them to be loving and giving people, and all were filled with such gratitude for the gift of Christmas we shared with each of them. It was truly an unforgettable experience for us all.
