Your Skills Need To Be Rapidly Evolving to Survive
Change, it’s often said, is the only constant.
Indeed, one of the fundamental properties of life is that it must adapt to the unceasing flow of environmental changes in order to survive. Species that are able to change tend to flourish; those that are not are consigned to the dustbins of history.
These forces apply to individuals just as much as they do to species. Take human beings, for example. As a species, we’re remarkably adaptable. In the span of just a few hundreds of thousands of years, we’ve managed to spread out and occupy almost every nook and cranny of the globe, which is a feat that no other animal (as far as we know) has thus far managed to achieve. For more than a quarter of a million years, we’ve successfully overcome every single challenge that mother nature has thrown at us.
But as individuals, we’re far more diverse. Some of us thrive in rapidly-changing circumstances, some of us prefer things to remain the same, and others among us fall somewhere in between those two extremes.
This has implications in every walk of life, including the job market. Some jobs are well-suited to individuals who prefer stasis over change. But as a general rule, employers tend to look for employees who are able to rapidly update their skill sets and adapt to new challenges. This is a trend, furthermore, that has been quickened by the rapid advancements in technology that have been transforming our society in recent decades. Technological development has always coincided with human evolution, but it’s been accelerating more quickly than ever since the dawn of the computing age in the mid-twentieth century. Today, technological advancements are happening at such a fast clip that it can be literally disorienting to try to keep track of all of the innovation. And of course, this trend is compounded even further by the dramatic changes that are occurring within our society as a consequence of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
As a consequence, it’s now more important than ever before for employees to be able to routinely update their skill sets. As technologies evolve, so too do the best practices and norms of business. And just as natural selection favors the fittest of individuals, so too will the employers of tomorrow favor the most adaptable of employees.
