What is a Certified Lab Technician?

Certified lab technicians are specialists who have acquired certification of their knowledge and competence in the area of lab services, typically in the support of medical professionals, research, and development positions.

To gain this certification, a high school diploma or GED is required, as well as the completion of an Associate’s degree (2-year) or Bachelor’s degree (4-year) from a vocational school, community college, or university.

Common courses during a 2-to-4-year program include bacteriology, hematology, microbiology, lab procedure, and lab safety. These classes combine study with simulation to prepare you for work in a real lab.

Where Can You Obtain Lab Tech Certification?

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and the American Association of Bioanalysts Board of Registry (ABOR) both offer programs to certify lab technicians.

The ASCP Board of Certification has certified over 500,000 individuals. They are the gold standard of certification for medical laboratory professionals.

ABOR champions “alternative routes” to academic degrees by placing more importance on having the knowledge and skills necessary to earn a certificate, rather than how the knowledge or skills were obtained. Because of this, it’s possible to earn a certification from ABOR based on formal education, training, or experience.

Is Certification Necessary to Hold a Lab Technician Position?

No, certification is not required to obtain one of these jobs in the state of Texas. However, certification enhances your knowledge and competence, subsequently improving your resume, experience, and prospects for employment and career advancement.

For example, if one day you would like to move up the ladder from Lab Technician to Lab Director or Manager, securing a certification from the ASCP will greatly increase your chances.

What Do Certified Lab Technicians Do?

Lab technicians work in a variety of industries, including the following:

  • Medical/Health
  • Food Manufacturing
  • Industrial/Engineering

Lab technicians set up lab equipment, run lab tests, interpret and analyze the resulting data, compile those results, prepare reports, and present their conclusions.
